A Government of Betrayal: The Anatomy of a National Disgrace — by Patrick Obikwu

A Government of Betrayal: The Anatomy of a National Disgrace — by Patrick Obikwu

When a government ascends to power on the wings of promise but governs with the fist of betrayal, it ceases to be a servant of the people and becomes their scourge. The administration in question has not merely failed to fulfil its election pledges—it has trampled upon them with impunity, converting the hopes of a nation into the ash and rubble of despair.
It came into office with bold declarations—economic revival, job creation, security, social equity, and a war against poverty. But beneath the gilded rhetoric lay a hollow core, devoid of vision, empathy, or competence. What followed was not a stumble, but a calculated march in the opposite direction: a deliberate deepening of inequality, a callous indifference to the suffering of the vulnerable, and a systematic dismantling of public trust.

This government’s economic policy—if it deserves to be called that—is a masterclass in ineptitude and cruelty. Inflation has spiralled unchecked, wages remain stagnant, and basic necessities have become luxuries for the average citizen. The cost of living crisis is no longer a crisis—it is a death sentence for the poor, a slow suffocation of the working class, and a daily humiliation for millions who now queue not for jobs, but for survival. And yet, in the corridors of power, opulence thrives. The lavishness of government spending on itself, the obscenity of unchecked corruption, and the brazen theft of public resources paint a damning portrait of a regime utterly divorced from the reality of the people it governs.

Worse still is the regime’s Orwellian gift for blame-shifting. In place of accountability, it offers propaganda; in place of solutions, it offers excuses. Every failure is someone else’s fault—global markets, past administrations, international conspiracies—everyone but those holding the reins of power. It is a government allergic to truth and hostile to scrutiny, insulating itself with spin doctors, sycophants, and state-sanctioned silence.

As poverty expands its reach and hardship becomes the norm, the moral failure of this government is laid bare. It is not simply that it has failed—it is that it has abandoned. It has abandoned its mandate, its people, and its own conscience. It governs not to uplift, but to extract; not to protect, but to repress.

History will remember this government not for its empty slogans or theatrical gestures, but for the ruin it authored. It will be recorded as a warning: that when power is seized by the dishonest and wielded by the indifferent, the result is national regression masked as governance.

This is not governance. This is betrayal. And betrayal, once exposed, demands not patience—but reckoning.
