Nigeria’s Quest for United Nations Security Council Permanent Seat, a Huge Joke
By virtue of Nigeria’s current position as one of the World’s most insecure nations, the country is totally incompetent to aspire for UN Security Council permanent seat.
A nation that could not tame the activities of Boko Haram terrorists in 16 years has nothing to offer at global stage to enhance peace.
One of the primary responsibilities of UN Security Council is maintaining international peace and security by identifying threats, recommending peaceful settlements, imposing sanctions, and authorising peacekeeping operations or the use of force to resolve conflicts. Going by this, can Nigeria give what it does not have?
One may ask, what value would Nigeria add to the UN Security Council if given the permanent seat? Or is it about scoring cheap political points?
I watched Vice President Kasim Shettima, delivering Nigeria’s statements at UNGA this morning where he again, reiterated Nigeria’s demand for UN Security Council permanent seat.
I was wondering what was in the minds of the World leaders who were listening to him especially those who knew how a small group of bandits grew to become a monster daring all our security forces with temerity.
No serious minded leader will take Nigeria’s request serious because of its abysmal failure in handling its internal security effectively.
Another key component factor that may hinder Nigeria’s request for permanent seat is the perpetual abuses being carried out by some elements within the Nigeria’s security circle. Human rights abuses are bing carried out on a daily basis unabated, and in most cases, at the highest level of authority.
If Nigeria’s request was acceded to, the country may ended up becoming a liability to UN Security Council rather than an asset.
Nigeria must restore its dignity, values and respect before any of its request will be taken serious among comity of nations, but for now, the country is just a laughing stock for the World.
