POLITICS – TIME WELL WASTED
The prejudi-cratic system Nigeria is blundering through is a system that only acknowledges opposition from within. Ignorance has devoured the principle of Accountability, intended to be the binding contract between the voter and his representatives.
So many have decided to agitate instead of participate. But, for most regional agitators to achieve the objective of keeping all office holders true to their oath of office, they must understand today’s political terrain and re-draw their approach.
Additionally, the Legislature’s most important function is to check and balance the powers of the Executive. However, it seems nobody in politics today likes to plan for the good of the system and or Nigeria. The Senate can and should be the breeding ground for our presidential aspirants.
The constitution has delegated separate powers to three branches. Regrettably, the Executive branch has effervesced the Judiciary and the Legislature into submission. With the executive doing as it pleases with the treasury, and the Legislature unable to perform the responsibility of countering the excesses of the executive, it is foregone and accepted that the two disadvantage branches will only continue to serve as stooges in a corrupt system.
It is apparent, greed has transformed the National Assembly into a crowd of hungry peddlers, no better than the 419/Yahoo boys. Nigeria needs, in the National chamber, a collection of men and women who have very normal appetite and few needs, which is combined with a strong desire to make Nigeria great. Only men and women of that persuasion can change the dynamics of our current politics and move Nigeria forward.
Nigerians must elect the few good men/women who are capable of developing a culture of focusing on action and activities that can make a difference, rather than waste (albeit well wasted) time, shouting at the top of their voices, to a few empty Stadiums.
We have to cure ourselves from this disease of “sha yanzu magani yanzu” and begin to look into the future; our politicians must realize that Elections will not end in 2023, despite all the doomsayers and naysayers.
In many developed democracies, you will find that most politicians work their way from the local, to the state, to the National stage. In Nigeria it must be overnight. It takes work to become a leader. The day will come in Nigeria when you cannot buy your way into any office. Those who do the work will eventually be rewarded. May be then, our politicians will know that threats, insults, and violence will never win elections.
Nigerians are aware that very few speak for the good and decent Nigerians. Many forgotten peasants of our great nation have never received any benefit from the stupendous oil wealth that we continue to fight over. Only an insignificant, select few, manage to keep the wealth to themselves, by ensuring that the system never works in ways to benefit all Nigerians.
Some are readying to boycott the elections, that is, unless Nigeria is reconstituted in their favour, with each zone retaining its resources and contributing leftovers to the centre on the basis of a ‘greedy principle’. Surprisingly, many Nigerians are now seriously prepared to agree to that sharing principle, only to discover that the agitators have viciously turned on their own population, by violently forcing them to declare independence from the whole.
This kind of posturing by their political champions is very dangerous to the current pregnant democratic ideals. It is careless for the most educated and most powerful in their midst to support such mindless agitators. Every Zones need to defend the integrity of the ballot box. Common sense has told us that no singular zone can elect the president.
Of course some of the confusion might be due to the growing pain of learning how to walk these steps of democracy, since we have been shamelessly crawling for almost 24 years now.
Nigerians deserve better representation at all strata of the political terrain.
If you want to be the president, or your region wants to produce the next president, then go out and campaign for it – do not threaten anyone to ‘elect you or else’. We are all eventually going to have to vote for the office of the president. Choose wisely.
My vote is going to go to the best candidate for Nigeria!! We should all see to it that our votes are counted for the right person. In the meantime, will the politicians please stop wasting our time over issues that has more to do with their pockets than our well being!!
