BREAKING: Supreme Court Has Ordered That Allocation Be Paid To The 774 Local Governments DIRECTLY.
The Supreme Court has declared that it is unconstitutional for state governors to hold onto funds meant for Local Government (LG) administrations.
In its lead judgement read on Thursday by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court observed that the state governments’ refusal of financial autonomy for local governments has gone on for over two decades.
1. Henceforth, FG will not pay any LG without their own account the monthly percentage from FAAC. At the same time , no state will receive LG fund on their behalf. In a layman terms, nothing like joint account again.
2. The use of caretaker is now illegal
3. AGF to sue State Government and SIEC as they ask court to abolish SIEC conduction election
4. If number 3 enters , INEC will henceforth be conducting LG Elections
With this judgment, the FG should only pay LGAs that have democratically elected governments, not caretaker councils imposed by governors.
