Northern Governors! Governing Without a Master Plan

Northern Governors! Governing Without a Master Plan

Governors play a pivotal role in shaping the future of their states. Their primary responsibility is to create and implement policies that foster economic growth, excellence in education, ensure peace and security, uphold justice, and promote social welfare. These are not just lofty ideals, but essential foundations for a thriving society. The impact of these policies is far-reaching and can elevate the quality of life for citizens, promoting long-term prosperity.

However, many governors appear to focus on short-term, high-visibility projects, which are often outside the scope of their direct responsibilities. This diversion of attention is concerning, especially when projects that should be handled by specialized commissioners or agencies within a comprehensive, long-term master plan are instead pushed to the forefront.

A master plan is a strategic roadmap that sets clear, achievable goals for a state’s growth and development over a specified period—usually five to ten years. It takes into account the long-term needs of the state, focusing on infrastructural development, human capital, and economic sustainability.

The issue here is that governors often step into the realm of these technical areas, bypassing the need for collaboration with their appointed commissioners. Instead of focusing on high-level governance—such as policy-making and ensuring the effective functioning of various departments—they take on projects better suited for the hands of experts in specific areas. This is detrimental because it detracts from their ability to focus on their core duty: strategic governance.

A well-crafted master plan is crucial for any state’s development, as it offers a clear framework for progress. It outlines priorities, ensures the efficient use of resources, and helps coordinate efforts across different sectors.

When governors engage in micromanagement of projects that should fall under other departments, they risk overextending their reach and failing to create the kind of long-lasting, systemic change that can improve lives over generations.

The true power of governance lies not in overseeing every project directly but in ensuring that the right structures are in place to allow the state to progress smoothly and effectively. Governors need to embrace the power of delegation, trust in the expertise of their commissioners, and focus on laying the foundation for sustainable, long-term growth.

By doing so, they can help create the conditions for their states to thrive, setting a clear vision for the future while allowing those with specialized knowledge to execute on the ground.
